Question:
How much does a kitchen or bathroom remodeling project cost? I am in the suburbs of Chicago and have received 3 bids. One bid is from a designer, one is from a contractor and one is from a handyman, and they are all so different. Please help!
Linda J.
Palatine, IL
Answer:
Linda, we hear this question very often. The truth is, you must first make sure you are comparing "apples to apples". There are many different levels of quality when comparing materials, so this could provide three totally different bids for the same project. Also, in regards to quality craftsmanship like most things; you get what you pay for. Inexpensive materials, can look wonderful if installed properly! Lastly, you must also compare the level of service and reliability each firm will deliver. Someone working from a home office might not offer the same service level as designer with a team of professional staff. Your best bet would be to obtain (3) bids and have a general idea of what you are looking for, so you can compare "apples to apples". Good luck!

Question:
I hate the look of my nasty grout in my master bathroom. If I remodel my bathroom, I am worried the same thing will happen again. What would you recommend I do to keep my grout looking new?
Mark B.
Arlington Heights, IL
Answer:
Mark, there are (2) ways to assure the same things does not happen. The first would be to seal all of your new grout on a regular basis. This will ensure it stays looking new, but it can become tedious. Your best bet would be to use an Epoxy grout from the start, which does not need any sealing! Be prepared as it does cost a bit more to install, but it is worth its weight in gold. You can read more about maintenance free kitchens and baths here, we go into greater detail about grout.

Question:
How long does a Kitchen remodel take? I have heard horror stories of 6 months or more.
Answer:
A kitchen remodel from our firm averages 3-4 weeks, but we can only comment on what we are capable of. If you are working with a firm that is operating outside of their comfort level, then your guess is as good as mine! The key to a good kitchen remodel is in the preparation. The more prepared your designer/remodeler is the better the project will go.
